The Term Trichology derives from the Greek "trich" meaning hair and "ology" - the study of. Trichology is the branch of medical and cosmetic study and practice dealing with diseases and disorders of the hair and scalp.
While suffering from hair loss or uncomfortable scalp issues may leave you apprehensive, the Trichology process needn't be daunting or complicated.
All appointments are conducted in complete confidence and with utmost privacy, but you may bring someone with you if it'll help you feel more comfortable. You should also bring with you details of any medications, supplements, herbal remedies and/or products you are using along with any recent pathological or haematology test results.
During your private consultation, we take a case history, look at all potential factors and examine both the area of complaint and any relevant associated areas you may not have considered e.g. nails, eyes and ears. We may use a mag-lamp and/or a special trichoscope to examine the scalp in fine detail and we may also take hair samples to examine under the microscope.
We use a methodical approach for differential diagnosis and at the end of your appointment you should have both a diagnosis, a prognosis and recommendations for treatment (in-salon) and at home after care/ongoing management. If necessary, we will write a referral to your GP suggesting blood tests and in some (rare) cases we may suggest referral to a dermatologist for prescription treatments. A follow up review in 6-12 weeks may also be recommended to assess the results of your treatment.
Should you opt for an in-salon treatment the process is as follows.
Your appointment will be held in a private studio and will involve a scalp treatment, one or two shampoo treatments, a conditioning treatment (if appropriate), a steam treatment.
Some conditions also involve treatment with Infrared or UV lamps.
Your customised treatment will always be explained to you and you will be made aware of the results you can expect and whether one treatment or a course of treatments may be required.
